U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations will visit Syria next week and ask for cooperation in the U.N. Security Council, where the Middle Eastern country has just taken a seat.
AP reports that John Negroponte will also visit Egypt, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan during the upcoming January 19-25 trip, in which he will inform governments on U.S. goals in the council, according to an announcement made by the U.S. Mission.
A U.S. official said that the Ambassador will talk about all issues the council has standing before it, but will not plunge into the Middle East Peace Process.
One of the key issues is reviewing sanctions against Iraq.
Syria, which is on the U.S. list of countries accused of supporting terrorism, was chosen to be a member of the U.N. Security Council for two years starting in January. (Albawaba.com)
