Abdelfattah Amor, an independent United Nations expert on freedoms of religion and belief, is scheduled to visit Algeria from September 16 to 26, the world body said Tuesday.

The United Nations statement, released in Geneva, said Amor would be visiting Algeria, a predominantly Muslim country, upon the invitation of Algerian authorities.

He is in particular to meet with religious and other officials, and private citizens, in the main cities of Algiers, Constantine and Oran with a view to reporting on religious freedom in the country, the statement said, according to AFP.

Amor is a special rapporteur on religious freedoms for the United Nations Human Rights Commission. His job was created under a 1981 UN declaration outlawing all forms of discrimination on grounds of religion or belief. (Albawaba.com)
