A U.N. team on Saturday arrived in Baghdad to study whether elections can be held before the handover of power to Iraqis by June 30, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan declared.
Announcing the arrival of the U.N. officials, Annan said they will start "intensive consultations" with Iraqi leaders and members of the U.S.-led occupation.
Annan sent the team to break a deadlock between the country's top Shiite Muslim cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani, and the U.S.-led occupation authority over the timetable for elections and the transfer of power. (Albawaba.com)
