UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will intervene in the dispute between the UAE and Iran over the three islands occupied by Iran only if requested by either party, according to Assistant Secretary-General Al Akhdar Al Ibrahimi.

The former Algerian foreign minister made his comment during a lecture at the Zayed Centre for Coordination and Follow-Up on the UAE's development and the UN's peacekeeping efforts, reported the Gulf News.

Asked about the UN's role in solving problems such as the Iranian occupation of Abu Mousa and Greater and Lesser Tunbs, Al Ibrahimi said, "The UN Secretary-General does not intervene in such issues unless asked to do so."
