Two Iranian drug smugglers were sentenced to death and four to life in prison after they set fire to their boat loaded with close to a ton of hashish during a police chase at sea, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Dubai's court of first instance sentenced the Iranians to death for possession, smuggling and trafficking in drugs, arson and endangering life, according to Gulf News

The six men were charged with smuggling over 810 kilos of hashish and deliberately starting a fire on the boat. The smugglers nearly died and had to be rescued by helicopter off the coast of Dubai after lobbing petrol bombs at police who boarded the vessel, sparking the blaze. Police recovered over 700 kilos of hashish, while the rest sank with the ship. (Albawaba.com)
