Douglas Hunter, deputy assistant secretary for population, refugees and migration at the US State Department, has praised UAE efforts to extend aid to Afghan refugees.

Hunter’s statement came after the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) dispatched four planeloads to the refugees, who had crossed their country’s border with Iran.

According to the Emirate’s official news agency (WAM), the RCS will on Monday distribute 1,000 tents, 17,000 blankets and 200 tons of foodstuff, including flour, sugar, rice and olives as well as medicines.

Mohammed Habroush Al Rumaithi, head of RCS delegation, said that the third batch of assistance would be delivered inside Afghan territories to refugees whose situation “is very harsh.”

Hunter underscored the urgent need for stepping up the shipment of relief supplies in the next four to six weeks, before the severe winter weather hampers relief efforts, the Khaleej Times reported.

"We are reaching out to over three and a half million people now and the figure of the needy is likely to double as the [US] military operations continue," he said – Albawaba.com
