ALBAWABA - An Iranian commander told Tasnim news agency that the U.S. military attacked two civilian boats, not boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.

The commander also added that the attacks killed at least five people. The U.S. "must be held accountable for its crime", he added.

A statement was made by U.S. Admiral Brad Cooper, who said Central Command forces (CENTCOM) had targeted six IRGC vessels that had attempted to interfere with the U.S. military's mission to escort stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz.

On the other hand, President Donald Trump said the military targeted seven boats belonging to the Iranian army.

Trump announced Monday the launch of an operation, dubbed "Project Freedom", which has shaken a fragile ceasefire reached between Iran and the US on April 8.

Iran's state broadcaster IRIB quoted an unnamed Iranian military commander as saying that the country opened a probe following the U.S. claim of attacks on IRGC vessels.

Last night, the United Arab Emirates' air defence systems intercepted 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and four drones believed to be launched by Iran.

A fire also broke out after an attack in Fujairah that saw three people injured.
