Inmates in Bayrampasa prison, Istanbul, threw up barricades and took 10 guards hostage to prevent a fellow prisoner being removed to another jail, NTV television reported Wednesday.

Security forces, including police and firemen were standing by to intervene, the television said.

There are 1,900 inmates in Bayrampasa prison, which houses 3,000 common law prisoners altogether.

In June last year, a fight between prisoners in the same bloc resulted in the death of two inmates.
