Turkey on Thursday urged its citizens in Pakistan to leave the country in the face of mounting tension in the region over Osama bin Laden, the chief suspect of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

A foreign ministry statement warned Turks in Pakistan that their security was not guaranteed and called on those who had to stay due to compelling reasons to take maximum precautions.

The statement urged those in areas close to the border with Afghanistan to move to other regions as soon as possible or to leave the country.

It also advised citizens to cancel planned trips to Pakistan.

The appeal comes amid widespread expectation that the United States will attack the Afghan bases of bin Laden with Pakistani support -- ANKARA (AFP)
