At least 35 Sudanese were shot dead in tribal violence last week in an Ethiopian refugee camp, relief organizations in Addis Ababa said on Tuesday.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said 33 refugees, of which 18 were women and 15 men, were killed during clashes last Wednesday at the Fugnido camp in the western Gambella region, near the Sudanese border.
Thirty-one of the victims were members of the Dinka tribe, while two belonged to the Shuluk tribe, the UNHCR said, citing its own and local humanitarian sources, adding that nine people had been wounded in the clashes.
The attack was initiated by the Anuak tribe, according to reports given to the UNHCR, cited by AFP.
That incident was preceded two days earlier by another clash between the two tribes, which killed two and injured eleven.
Local humanitarian sources said six other bodies were found last weekend outside of the camp, however the UNHCR could not confirm the report. (Albawaba.com)
