The trial of 101 Islamists, arrested after clashes that broke out during a parliamentary by-election, started on Monday in the port city of Alexandria, court sources said.
Thirty-five defendants appeared before the High State Security Court, a tribunal of exception whose verdicts cannot be appealed. Thirty-five others will appear on Tuesday before the same court and the remaining 35 on Wednesday, AFP said.
The defendants, supporters of the banned-but-tolerated Muslim Brotherhood, are facing charges including "stirring discord and undermining security." According to police sources, the defendants were accused of attacking polling stations, damaging buses and blocking traffic during a hotly-contested by-election in Alexandria back in the month of June.
