Some one thousand students demonstrated Wednesday in the campus of Cairo University to protest American threats of war on Iraq and a planned visit to Egypt by newly re-elected Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
"George Bush, o drunkard, in Baghdad your tomb has been dug," they chanted, also assailing Arab leaders accused of inaction. "In the name of peace, Arab leaders have become rats," shouted a student.
The students rallied upon a call from Islamic, leftist and Arab nationalist groups. Organizers told AFP the authorities had approved the demonstration.
Nevertheless, a couple of dozen policemen were posted on the gates to prevent the demonstration from leaving the campus. Lorries carrying more policemen were positioned further away as reinforcement.
In addition, students sang an Islamist-inspired song denouncing the invitation issued by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. "Sharon, the damned, is coming for a visit, and it is no honor for us," it said.
The rally ended without incident. (Albawaba.com)
