Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy is due to begin a 5-day-visit to the Middle East on Sunday. He is scheduled to meet with leaders of the region, according to IRNA.
The EU Special Representative to the Middle East, Miguel Angel Moratinos will accompany him on his trip to Israel, Egypt and Jordan. ''In his tour, the EU foreign policy chief will continue the efforts of the EU in the search for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,'' said a press release issued by Solana's office.
“In the most difficult moment for the Peace Process since the Oslo Agreement, Javier Solana will appeal to both parties to reach an end of violence and a resumption of dialogue”. “He will also encourage Israelis and Palestinians to work towards the definition of a political perspective,” it said.
In the course of his visit, the High Representative is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, amongst other leaders. He is due to travel to Ramallah to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and other senior Palestinian officials.
In Amman and Cairo he will meet with Egyptian and Jordanian leaders. (Albawaba.com)
