Six Russian soldiers and three rebel guerrillas were killed over a period of 24 hours in skirmishes in Chechnya, separatist command claimed on Monday.

Four Russian troopers died in landmine explosions in Chechnya's south-eastern regions of Shali and Vedeno, and two more were killed in rebel attacks on checkpoint stations in Grozny, the separatists claimed.

Russians killed two rebel guerrillas during a shootout with a separatist group cornered in the eastern region of Nozhai-Yurt, rebel officials added.

There was no official confirmation of these reports.

Russian military officials quoted by ITAR-TASS said that a district police chief Visit Erenukayev was killed in Grozny when his vehicle hit a landmine. (Albawaba.com)
