A North Korean delegation to high-level talks with South Korea said Wednesday the communist state had no intention of producing nuclear weapons, according to South Korean officials.
"The North stressed that it has no intention to produce nuclear weapons," said Rhee Bong-Jo, spokesman for South Korea's delegation to the cabinet-level talks.
Briefing on the first hour-long session of talks Rhee said the North's statement was made after the South Korean side called on North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions, AFP reported.
"The South emphasized that overall inter-Korean relations would be unable to move ahead without the nuclear issue being resolved," Rhee said.
South Korean officials said the talks could help create the conditions for a resumption of dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington.
"We urged them to take reliable steps the international community could accept," Rhee said. (Albawaba.com)
