ALBAWABA - Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny has passed away while in custody in Russia, according to reports from the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN). Navalny, who was imprisoned in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region, experienced a decline in health and lost consciousness.

Despite efforts by medical staff, Navalny's condition did not improve, leading to his death. The cause of death is currently being investigated.

The Kremlin has confirmed that Navalny's death is under investigation by the Federal Penitentiary Service, following standard procedures without requiring specific directives. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov assured that doctors will conduct necessary examinations.

Navalny, known for his criticism of the Russian government, was detained upon his return to Moscow from Germany, where he received treatment after being poisoned. In previous legal proceedings, Navalny was sentenced to prison for violating probation terms related to a past embezzlement case.

In a separate trial last year, Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison for allegedly forming an extremist group while incarcerated.

Navalny's inclusion on a list of individuals linked to terrorism and extremism in Russia had sparked controversy earlier.
