The commander of the Russian Northern Fleet, Admiral Vyacheslav Popov, has been fired for making "serious mistakes" in connection with the sinking of the Kursk submarine 16 months ago, Interfax quoted the Russian navy commander as saying Saturday.
Popov, along with the head of the joint chiefs of staff of the Northern Fleet, Mikhail Motsak, were relieved of their functions and demoted "for serious mistakes in organizing the fleet's maneuvers," Admiral Vladimir Kuriedov said.
The nuclear-powered Kursk sank under still unexplained circumstances in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000, killing all 118 men aboard -- MOSCOW (AFP)
