Russia jails US citizen for 6 years over fighting for Ukraine

ALBAWABA - A court in Moscow, Russia has recently sentenced 72-year-old American citizen Stephen Hubbard to six years in prison for allegedly fighting for Ukraine against the country as a mercenary, according to CNN and TASS. 

Hubbard pleaded guilty on Sept. 2024 over being a mercenary for Ukraine in Izyum and signing a $1,000 per month contract. He told Moscow City Court in September, "Yes I agree with the charges" during a hearing. Moreover, the 73-year-old was detained by Russian forces in Apr. 2022.

On a similar note, a former marine and American citizen named Robert Gilma was also sentenced to seven years and one month in Voronezh's prison for allegedly attacking a police officer in Russia, according to RIA Novosti. 

His sentence was later reduced to three years and a half.
