Perushaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd, Malaysia's biggest carmaker, will probably sign an agreement to sell 5,000 cars to Iraq, reported state news agency Bernama, citing Abdul Latif Awang, the Malaysian ambassador to Iraq.

The cars by Proton, as the Malaysian carmaker is known, will be sold for $5,735 each under the so-called oil-for-food program introduced by the United Nations, the report said.

The UN has endorsed Proton's plan to sell cars to Iraq, said Tun Myat, the UN assistant secretary-general and UN humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, according to the report.

According to the Bloomberg TV channel, Proton is stepping up plans to boost sales overseas to help offset competition at home, which is expected to intensify when the industry opens up in 2005 – Albawaba.com
