The rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) said it captured a strategic crossroads in the country's war-stricken south on Sunday, destroying two Sudanese army formations.
"Our forces in a sudden attack ... today captured the strategic Lafon outpost, aborting government preparations to gather its forces in Lafon and launch an attack on the (rebel-held) town of Kapoeta," a faxed statement received by AFP said.
"In a battle that lasted about 90 minutes two battalions with a (combined) strength of 800 to 900 officers and men were destroyed, and all their stores captured," it said, without mentioning rebel losses. (Albawaba.com)
