A power grid will be established soon linking Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait, reported Gulf Times Thursday.
Qatar’s Minister of Energy and Industry Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah said that the four countries have agreed to form an association to discuss the project.
The minister added that the project has prospects of covering the UAE and Oman in the next stage.
"In future, all Arab states and even Europe will be covered," al-Attiyah said.
He said the proposed grid would boost investments in the power sector in the region in addition to provide the much-needed electricity to energy-poor countries, according to the paper.
The grid can also tackle emergency power failures, Gulf Times added.
Dammam has been chosen as the headquarters of the proposed power grid.
Meanwhile, al-Attiyah said Qatar was holding talks with Kuwait for the supply of some 750 million cubic feet a day of Qatari gas.
