Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Monday that he would visit Egypt next week at the invitation of Cairo, reported AFP.
"I received yesterday an invitation to go to Egypt, after a long break" in ministerial visits between the two countries, Peres said at a meeting of MPs from his Labor Party.
Peres was quoted as saying that Egypt's invitation was the result of his meeting with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on June 29 in Lisbon.
"One of the positive results of this meeting was that it contributed to re-establishing a climate of confidence with the Arab countries," said Peres, who was lambasted by right-wing members of Israel's unity government for his meeting with Arafat in Portugal.
The Israeli foreign minister had last visited Egypt in April.
He was received by a wave of criticism by the Egyptian media. A paper described him as a Nazi and called on the government to dismiss him.
The editor in chief of the Egyptian opposition paper reiterated his paper’s position in an interview with Albawaba.com, rejecting the idea of apologizing.
