ALBAWABA - Following a round of meetings in Pakistan and Oman, Iran's top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, is heading to Russia as attempts to resume talks with the US appear to be making little headway.

Araghchi is scheduled to see President Vladimir Putin in Moscow after departing Pakistan on Sunday, according to Tehran. The visit coincides with continuing discussions about the Iranian issue and regional trends.

As part of Pakistan's mediation efforts, Araghchi met with top Pakistani officials in Islamabad prior to traveling to Russia, including Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Coordination of regions

The Iranian minister also met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Muscat, where they talked about diplomatic ways to resolve the crisis and regional security, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.

According to sources, Araghchi used diplomatic channels to communicate Iran's stances and important "red lines," especially with regard to the nuclear matter and maritime security.

Slow progress

Despite these initiatives, Tehran and Washington continue to hold solid positions, making the chances of a resolution questionable. Although a scheduled visit by U.S. envoys to Pakistan was canceled owing to lack of progress, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran might still get in touch if it is eager to discuss.

Continuous tensions

The situation is still tight as U.S. actions against Iranian exports continue, and the Strait of Hormuz continues to be disrupted. Analysts caution that there is still a strong chance of further escalation in the absence of diplomatic action.
