The Pentagon late Tuesday denied reports that Kuwaiti boats were fired upon by Iraqi vessels in Kuwaiti waters, however acknowledged that United States troops were aboard the Kuwaiti boats and that a US soldier was slightly injured when two of the boats accidentally collided.
A Pentagon source, requesting anonymity, told AFP that two US service personnel were aboard three Kuwaiti coast guard boats conducting maneuvers in Kuwaiti waters on Tuesday when the incident took place.
"There were no Iraqi boats and no gunfire," he said, contradicting earlier reports that Iraqi boats had fired on the Kuwaiti boats.
The Kuwaiti Al-Rai Al-Am had reported that a US serviceman and two Kuwaiti coastguards were wounded when an Iraqi ship opened fire on two Kuwaiti vessels on patrol in coastal waters. (Albawaba.com)
