ALBAWABA - Over 186,000 French citizens have signed a petition to impeach President Emmanuel Macron for failing to select a left-wing prime minister after their early general election victory.
Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) member Clemence Guette stated on her X account that the online petition requesting Macron's impeachment had almost 200,000 signatures. Guette has urged the French people to join the campaign, blaming Macron for allowing the previous administration to continue despite election results and opposing measures outside his own agenda.
This petition, signed by over 186,000 individuals, accuses Macron for not appointing a new prime minister more than two months after the elections. According to the text, such a delay is unique in parliamentary governments and representative democracies, proving Macron is dictatorial.
LFI officially proposed Macron's impeachment to the National Assembly on August 31. The party claims Macron broke his obligations by disregarding election results. Despite the left-wing New People's Front (NFP) having the most members in the National Assembly, Macron has rejected Lucie Castets as prime minister and kept negotiating a new administration.
Macron has been meeting with politicians at the Élysée Palace since August 23 to form a new cabinet. He met Xavier Bertrand, Bernard Cazeneuve, Nicolas Sarkozy, and François Hollande.
After the early general elections, the NFP and its allies won 193 seats in the National Assembly, becoming the biggest political organization. Macron's governing coalition has 166 seats, while the far-right National Rally (RN) and its allies have 142.
The French Constitution allows the president to choose a prime minister, although political tradition favors the party or coalition with the most Assembly votes. Macron's failure to follow this tradition has fueled political tensions and his impeachment.
