A powerful booby-trap car bomb killed a chef with the Spanish navy command in this Basque city early Friday.

Two other people were wounded by the blast, the first fatal attack in Spain this year and which police said bore the hallmarks of the Basque separatist group ETA.

No-one has immediately claimed responsibility.

Police named the victim as Ramon Diez Garcia, married with two children, and said the bomb was attached to the underside of his car. It went off when he tried to start the engine.

The explosion happened close to a military compound in the Loyola area of the city at 0640 GMT, destroying the vehicle.

The two people wounded by the blast were driving by at the time, and were taken to hospital. Their injuries were believed to be relatively minor -- SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (AFP)
