Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak received on Thursday US Assistant Secretary of State William Burns for talks on the situation in the Middle East, a presidential source was quoted as saying by AFP.

Retired general Anthony Zinni, who the US embassy had said earlier in the week would also be coming to Cairo, was reported to be holding another round of talks in Israel in his capacity as US envoy, said the agency.

The Cairo-based daily Al Ahram said that Mubarak would meet with both envoys.

The two envoys began a peace mission Tuesday tasked with bringing about a lasting ceasefire between Israelis and Palestinians. They have already met with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

After meeting with Arafat Wednesday in the West Bank town of Ramallah, Zinni declared it was "time for change" in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Arafat, for his part, declared that he was "going to make 100 percent effort" towards reaching a ceasefire.
