Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad arrived in Algiers late Sunday at the beginning of a three-day official visit for talks, focused mainly on trade, officials said Monday.

Mahathir, who is the first Malaysian Prime Minister to visit Algeria since the North African country received independence in 1962, was greeted by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The Malaysian Premier is accompanied by a large delegation of businessmen.

Algerian officials, on their part, said the visit was "a sign of Malaysia's desire to build a partnership with Algeria." (Albawaba.com)
