ALBAWABA - US President Donald Trump said he would feel safer if the US took control of Iran’s enriched uranium, but added suggested the action would be more for show than for practical need.

Trump himself said this while he was in Beijing. “Having the uranium would send a strong message. Even if it does not fundamentally change the situation on the ground.” But he also pressed Tehran hard, telling them he wouldn’t wait much longer and urging them to move rapidly to a settlement.

He also said that military options are still on the table. He suggested if negotiations fail, the US may strike Iran's nuclear sites again.

Trump also stated he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Iran. The two leaders agree Iran must not develop nuclear weapons and the Strait of Hormuz must be kept open, he said.

While the US has bombed Iran's nuclear plants in the past, no one knows for certain where Iran's enriched uranium is being kept. Some experts believe it could be hidden far underground, making it hard to detect and retrieve.

Again, things are pretty tight in Washington DC. Lawmakers also attempted to approve a bill that would have restricted Trump’s power to deploy military force without first receiving Congress’s approval, but failed. The narrow vote illustrates how divided the U.S. is on how to deal with Iran.

Democrats worry it might become a broader issue, but the White House argues the president is only doing all he can to preserve U.S. interests.
