The United Nations should be the "judge" of whether or not a strike is launched on Iraq, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said on Tuesday prior to his departure for a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.
"We have the... problem of Iraq and whether a military strike will be launched against it or not. We say the United Nations should be the judge of this," Maher said, quoted by the state-run news agency MENA.
US President George W. Bush is due to deliver a speech before the body on Thursday that is expected to give the United Nations a final shot at peacefully disarming Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein.
Maher emphasized "the importance of everyone adhering to Security Council decisions in this matter" of Iraq, adding that resolutions include "the presence of (arms) inspectors, and it's important that they return to Iraq.
"At the same time, the UN Security Council does not permit military intervention without justification, and there is nothing in the UN charter (allowing) a state or states to intervene militarily to change the regime of another state," Maher said. (Albawaba.com)
