The Lebanese army said Thursday it has arrested members of a terrorist network that planned to attack a Western embassy and other foreign targets in Lebanon. The alleged conspirators were detained with the help of the Syrian forces in Lebanon, the army said in a written statement. The statement said the detainees were questioned and handed over to the "appropriate judicial authorities."

The network planned to attack security and military centers in Lebanon and to kidnap government officials to bargain for the release of detained comrades, the statement said.

Security sources said the targeted western diplomatic mission was the U.S. Embassy located in the neighborhood of Awkar, east of Beirut. The sources said between 10 and 13 people believed linked to possible attacks were arrested. (Albawaba.com)
