At least six die in Iraq car blasts as Shiite politician abducted

Two car bombs went off Friday morning near an interior ministry building in Baghdad. At least six people died and more than 40 were wounded, police said.


Police Capt. Nabil Abdel-qadir said the two car bombs exploded behind the interior ministry building. Six civilians were killed and three police officers were among the injured, he added, according to the AP.

 

Also in Baghdad, a Shi'ite politician was abducted on Thursday by gunmen who took him from his home in western Baghdad, police said on Friday, according to Reuters. Tawfiq al-Yassiri was a candidate for next month's elections, heading a list called Sun of Iraq.

 

Meanwhile, US death toll rose Thursday as a Marine killed the day before in Haditha, 220 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. An Army soldier died Thursday in a traffic accident near Beiji, 250 kilometers north of Baghdad, the US command said.
