ALBAWABA- A moderate earthquake struck off the coast of Peru on Tuesday, with monitoring agencies including the German Research Centre for Geosciences reporting a magnitude of approximately 5.8 to 5.9 at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers.

The quake occurred near Peru’s northern coastal region and was felt in nearby areas, though no immediate reports of major casualties, significant structural damage, or tsunami warnings were issued.

Seismologists said the shallow offshore earthquake caused noticeable shaking in coastal communities but was unlikely to trigger widespread destruction due to its location at sea.

Peru is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where the Nazca Plate subducts beneath the South American Plate. Moderate earthquakes are common in the country, although they can still cause localized panic and temporary disruptions.

The latest quake follows a series of seismic events recorded across Peru in recent months. On May 15, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near Palca in the Tacna region at a depth of about 135 kilometers, while earlier this month a magnitude 5.1 tremor was recorded near Tumbes.

Smaller offshore earthquakes measuring between 4.0 and 4.1 magnitude were also reported west of Minas de Marcona.
Earlier in 2026, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Lima and Chilca was felt across the capital, causing minor damage in some areas.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru continues to monitor seismic activity nationwide and has urged residents in high-risk areas to follow earthquake safety procedures, including securing heavy furniture and identifying evacuation routes.
