Six Iraqi police died and 10 injured in an early Friday clash with gunmen at a checkpoint north of Baghdad. According to AFP, a group of men in vehicles approached a police checkpoint near the town of Bohruz, 45 kilometers north of Baghdad, and opened fire on police at 7:00 am (0400 GMT), the source said.

Separately, a car bomb went off in the Dura neighborhood of Baghdad, killing a civilian and injuring eight other, hospital sources said.

Also Friday, the U.S. Army said it had killed five senior figures of al-Qaeda in Iraq during an airstrike last Saturday in Husaybah near the Syrian border. The five, including at least one North African, were responsible for bombings against U.S. and Iraqi forces, the announcement has indicated.

Elsewhere, gunmen killed a former colonel in the Iraqi air force, as he drove through Baghdad on Thursday, said police Capt. Talib Thamir.

Late Thursday, an American soldier died near Talil, 170 miles southeast of Baghdad, the military said.
