A decision has been taken to dissolve the Kuwaiti parliament amid a crisis over a new election law. The Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah called citizens for legislative elections on June 29, 2006. In his decree, the Kuwaiti leader noted "the variation of views" inside the parliament and exchange of accusations between MPs, and that discussions were leading to fruitless conclusions thus derailing functions of the National Assembly.

According to Kuna, he said these developments triggered discord among segments of community, distorting national dialogue and jeopardizing higher interests of the country.

Kuwait is facing a political deadlock over a controversial new election law, including the dissolution of parliament or the cabinet's resignation.
