A Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries official said this week that the ban imposed on import of meat and livestock from Japan is a precautionary move taken in order to prevent any products affected from mad cow disease from entering the UAE, according to Khaleej Times.
Director of the Animal Wealth Department at the Ministry, Abdullah Sultan Abdullah told the newspaper that the ban was only “temporary” and will continue until decided otherwise. He added that the current ban has been imposed following the International Epidemics Office’s report stating that it had discovered a fourth suspected case of the horrible disease.
It is said that Japan is the only country throughout the Asian continent where herds have been affected by the illness.
This is not the first time that the UAE has imposed a ban on import of livestock. In the past, after the Mad Cow disease outbreak, the UAE had imposed a ban on meat import from European countries such as the United Kingdom. (Albawaba.com)
