ALBAWABA - According to the Japan Times, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked southern Kyushu on Thursday afternoon, prompting the Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami alert for Kyushu's east and southern coasts, as well as the southern shore of Shikoku.

Tsunami waves of up to one meter might hit Miyazaki, Kochi, Oita, and Kagoshima prefectures, as well as the Kagoshima Prefecture islands of Tanegashima and Yakushima.

The tremor took place at 4:43 p.m. on Thursday in the Hyuganada Sea off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, at a depth of 30 kilometers. A tsunami warning was issued for a larger area, extending as far north as Chiba Prefecture's Boso Peninsula, Japan Times reported.
