Israeli tanks entered the West Bank town of Beit Sahur to the south of Jerusalem on Monday afternoon and destroyed a Palestinian security post, reported Al Jazeera satellite channel.
AFP reported earlier that a firefight erupted between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen in the town, which has been a frequent flashpoint during the nine-month Palestinian uprising against 34 years of Israeli military occupation.
The agency said that Palestinians first opened fire towards an Israeli military camp on the edge of Beit Sahur, and the army responded with tank shells and anti-tank rockets.
