Israeli police went on top alert on Monday for possible attacks at its international airport near Tel Aviv, causing massive traffic jams.

Police said security agents were systematically searching every vehicle heading into Ben Gurion international airport, and advised passengers to set off four hours before their flight.

Israel is on constant alert for attacks by Palestinian militants which have been on the increase since the eruption of the Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, more than nine months ago.

In the last attack, 21 young people, all except one Israelis, were killed when a suicide bomber from the radical Islamic movement Hamas blew himself up outside a beachfront Tel Aviv nightclub -- TEL AVIV (AFP)
