Israeli soldiers shot and killed an unarmed Palestinian member of Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in a West Bank refugee camp Monday after he tried to escape arrest and hid on a rooftop, Palestinian sources said.
In the al-Ain refugee camp near Nablus, Imad Mabruk, a senior activist in the PFLP, jumped from the roof of his home to the roof of a nearby house when Israeli soldiers surrounded his family home after midnight and demanded he surrender, his cousin, Yusef Mabruk, said, according to AP.
Mabruk hid on the roof for several hours, Yusef Mabruk said. At about 5 a.m. gunshots were heard. Shortly after the soldiers left, he said. The family found Mabruk's body, littered with gunshot wounds, on the roof, Yusef Mabruk said, adding that he was unarmed.
A PFLP leader in the Nablus area called the killing an "assassination" and vowed to retaliate.
In the Gaza Strip, soldiers shot dead a Palestinian. Three explosive devices were found on his body, according to media reports.
Meanwhile, with the looming US war on Iraq, the Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronoth reported that after the war, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat will be expelled unless he transfers all his powers to a prime minister.
It said that the conditions for Arafat’s expulsion were agreed in talks between Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and US President George W. Bush, and put down in writing. (Albawaba.com)
