Iraq: Scores killed in car blasts

A suicide car bomber detonated in a busy market in the Iraqi town of Hilla, south of Baghdad, killing several people. There were conflicting police reports about the death toll, ranging from four to 14.

Earlier, a car bomb exploded outside a hospital in the center of a town south of Baghdad on Thursday, killing 30 and injuring 35, a doctor said. Among the victims were four police guards, three women and two children, said Dr. Dawoud al-Taie, the director of the Mahmoudiya hospital.

 

According to the AP, Iraqi army Capt. Ibrahim Abdeallah conveyed the suicide bomber was targeting U.S. military vehicles parked near the hospital in Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles south of Baghdad.

 

In other attacks, three Iraqi security officials were shot dead in three separate incidents in Baghdad within an hour on Thursday, according to an Iraqi police official with Baghdad emergency police.

 

Meanwhile, two American troops died Wednesday of gunshot wounds southwest of Baghdad, the military said Thursday.
