The United Nations has announced in a recent report that more than 1,100 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Iraq in the month of September.

According to the report by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) released on Wednesday, 1,119 people, including 854 civilians and 265 members of Iraqi security forces, lost their lives last month.

The report says the figures represent an “absolute minimum” as they do not include people who died after fleeing their homes and those who lost their lives as a result of the lack of water, food, medicines, and healthcare.

The figures also exclude IS militants and victims in the western province of Anbar.

The capital, Baghdad, was the worst-affected, where 352 people were killed and 938 others injured.

Altogether, 1,604 people were wounded in September in acts of terrorism and violence.

During the month of August, 1,265 civilians were killed and 1,198 injured.

The Iraqi army has been engaged in a battle against ISIL militants for months.

Islamic State terrorists control large areas of Syria’s east and north. The group first sent its militants into Iraq in June, seizing large parts of land along the border between Syria and Iraq.

They have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations and crucifixions, against Iraqi communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, Yazidi Kurds and others.
