Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi urged the European Union (EU) on Wednesday to play a role in seeking a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Kharazi, during a telephone conversation with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, called upon the EU "to resolve the issue through active diplomatic roles and peaceful initiatives," IRNA said.

He expressed concern over "the regional consequences" of a possible US strike on Baghdad, saying such a move would "not solve any problem." According to the report, both sides emphasized the need for Iran-EU cooperation in this regard.

Solana said in Vienna on Wednesday he was convinced that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, which must be destroyed. "I did not need to listen to Tony Blair to be convinced that weapons of mass destruction exist in Iraq and that we have to do the utmost to get rid" of them, he said.

He was referring to the British Prime Minister's comments in London on Tuesday following the release of a long-awaited report outlining the threat from Iraq's weapons programs. (Albawaba.com)
