The head of the elections center of Iran’s Interior Ministry, Morteza Moballegh, has been summoned to court following a complaint by the oversight Guardian Council, the Persian daily Entekhab said Sunday, cited by the official Iranian news agency, IRNA.
The conservative-led council has accused the official of "spreading lies, "instigating public opinion" and "slander" in a television interview on June 9, a day after the presidential elections, it said.
According to the paper, Moballegh has been asked to appear in court on October 20 to stand trial.
Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari in May appointed Moballegh, a deputy interior minister and a reformist, to supervise the June elections.
The appointment came after the appeals court upheld the conviction of Mostafa Tajzadeh, a close ally of President Mohammad Khatami, who had been appointed earlier to oversee the polls.
Tajzadeh, described by the agency as “one of the boldest reformist voices,” was convicted of "electoral fraud" in the 2000 parliamentary elections. He denied the charge, IRNA said. – Albawaba.com
