Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced earlier this week that Iran would present its own proposal for Palestinian-Israeli peace to the United Nations. The plan was one that had apparently been introduced years ago by "the supreme leader", Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mottaki told reporters.

The minister added that, "The foreign ministry is going to propose to the United Nations a comprehensive plan for peace in the Middle East," according to Iranmania.com.

Khamenei had said years ago that the only way to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict would be to call for an international referendum of Palestinians and refugees of different religions across the globe.

The announcement comes days after Iran's President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said publicly that Israel "should be wiped off the map."

The statement resulted in widespread condemnation and the postponement of a scheduled visit by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on November 4 to Iran.
