Six young Iranians have been flogged publicly in the southwestern Iranian city of Doroud over the past two days for drunkenness and having illicit sex, the local police department reported Tuesday.
The youths, aged between 19 and 28, received 80-100 lashes upon the order of the local justice administration, the police said in a statement, cited by the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).
Five of them received 80 blows on Monday and another one was lashed 100 times Tuesday in a park.
The head of the justice administration, Mohammad-Sadeq Akbari, told IRNA that public enforcement of the divine laws will clear the way for establishment of a “healthy society.”
He called on the mass media to give a good coverage of the public floggings in the country.
It was the ninth public flogging of youths in Doroud since a wave of lashings started throughout the country.
