ALBAWABA - The Category 1 hurricane Beryl has struck the Texas coast, causing severe disruptions and leaving over a million homes and businesses without electricity.
Severe winds and torrential rains from Hurricane Beryl have resulted in widespread flooding in Houston, Texas. CenterPoint Energy, a major electricity and natural gas provider in the U.S., reported that more than 1 million homes and businesses are currently without power.
The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) indicated that Hurricane Beryl, which previously impacted the Caribbean, has made landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane. The NWS forecasts that Beryl could weaken to a tropical depression, with wind speeds not exceeding 60 kilometers per hour, by tomorrow.
Flight disruptions have also been significant, with over 1,000 flights canceled at Houston's two airports, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.
Residents along the Texas coast took preventive measures by boarding up their homes and businesses. Following mandatory evacuation orders, many from coastal towns have begun relocating to safer areas.
Tragically, Hurricane Beryl has claimed lives in its path, with reported fatalities including three individuals in Grenada, one in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and three in Venezuela.
