The military wing of Hamas has accused on Tuesday rival Fatah movement of uncovering "the plans of resistance in agreement with the Zionist occupation." In a statement to reporters, Ezz el-Din al- Qassam Brigades of Hamas accused a spokesman of Fatah of revealing their "military projects" in accordance with serving the Israeli occupation and "achieving ignoble political goals."
The latest war of words started Monday when Abdel Hakim Awad, a spokesman for Fatah, told the media that Hamas plans to assassinate senior Fatah figures, including President Mahmoud Abbas, by digging tunnels under roads leading to the border in northern Gaza Strip. The road is often used by senior diplomats, including Abbas, on their way to leave Gaza Strip towards Israel and the West Bank.
Denying Awad's comments, Mushier al-Masri, a spokesman for Hamas, said Tuesday that Hamas fighters "did not dig tunnels to assassinate Fatah leaders." "The armed factions can not accept the media incitement to be at the expense of resistance and its military tactics against the Israeli enemy," al-Masri added.
Hamas said the tunnels were aimed at foiling possible Israeli ground offensives and not at killing Fatah leaders.
