A group of 20 unidentified gunmen indiscriminately fired on a cluster of homes in a southern Philippine village Sunday, killing five people, the military said.
Local army spokesman Major Julieto Ando said the victims were sleeping inside their wooden huts when the attack occurred in a remote village in Koronadal in South Cotabato province.
Three of those killed belonged to one family while two others were neighbors, Ando said. Field reports did not identify the victims but said one was a 50-year-old woman and another was a minor.
No one has claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn attack but police and military have sent forces to scour outlying areas.
