Alerts over unsafe food are to be flashed around the Gulf through a network of food hygiene experts, reported the Manama-based Gulf Daily News.

The newly-formed GCC Food Safety Committee will work to ensure that information is given to health authorities in all six members states as quickly as possible, said committee chairman, Abdulla Ahmed Abdulla on Tuesday.

"It's vital to have a continuous communication link between all food safety officials in the Gulf countries to be able to learn of any problem and tackle it directly," he explained.

"It's also very important to establish a data base and encourage more exchange of information and experiences between them."

The committee aims to establish common food hygiene standards throughout the region.

"This will include banning certain food products, lifting bans and carrying out tests on them," continued Abdulla.

"We want all of this to be done as one country instead of each country having their own system.” – Albawaba.com
